The laboratories at Tripoli Medical Centre play an important role in clinical diagnostic and analytic and provide a broad variety of clinical testing services to communities throughout Tripoli and Libya. They are running a number of different tests on Microbiology, Biochemistry, Haematology, Virology and blood. The Accreditation of laboratories is a very suitable tool, to proof and demonstrate the technical competence in testing and analysing. Therefore the management of the Tripoli Medical Centre decided in the past to support these laboratories on their way to become accredited by an internationally recognised Accreditation body. The Gap analysis to be performed is the first step to analyse existing non-compliances of the laboratories concerning the ISO 15189 and to analyse future training needs. Follow-up measures will prepare them for the upcoming Accreditation in the near future. Published in 2003, the ISO 15189:2003 - Medical laboratories: particular requirements for quality and competence - quickly became a widely accepted standard to be used for accreditation of clinical laboratory competence. Its main objective is to allow laboratories to organize their operational procedures efficiently, meet the expectations of their clients and improve their service. The Accreditation against ISO 15189 is an important tool for assessing the competence of medical laboratories in their technical capacity and the effective quality management of a professional service and its staff. It is also very useful for understanding how the requirements of the generic certification standard ISO 9001:2000 – Quality Management - can be applied to clinical laboratory activities. The ISO 15189 standard can be understood as a practical complement to the generic requirements described in the ISO 9001.
